ARTIST
FELLOWSHIP

The Artist Fellowship is based on a collaborative relationship between a visiting fellow and an in-country host. The fellowship program provides outstanding visual artists a unique opportunity to work overseas, fully funded for one year. Fellows integrate into the host country’s community where they live and work on their own projects while also collaborating with their host artist. This unique fellowship offers creative collaboration in a dynamic and challenging environment inspiring new directions and creative expression for both the fellow and the host artist.

Program Details

Dates and Duration: Departure dates vary for each country site, see the current programs application and departure timeline below. Each placement is one year [12 months] in duration. Each fellow will complete required pre-departure assignments, readings, and orientation.

Expectations and Output: The Artist Fellowship is a rigorous program designed to challenge participants in their art making and research. Fellows will be expected to complete the following.

  • 20hours/week collaborative work with host artist or studio
  • 20hours/week independent studio work
  • Creation of a cohesive, innovative body of work
  • Weekly reports and reflections submitted to the ARTISTS ABROAD team for feedback.
  • Participation in weekly local arts event.
  • Quarterly research essays submitted to ARTISTS ABROAD for publication.
  • Culminating exhibition organized in collaboration with host artist or studio.
  • Artists talk, presentation, or workshop offered to local community.

Living Abroad

Studio Access: ARTISTS ABROAD fellows will be provided full access to a shared studio space. In-country orientation will include exploration of the space and of resources in the immediate community.

Host Artist: Each host is unique and offers a specific skill set and opportunity for collaboration. When choosing the program, consider the country site and the host artist. We strive to match artists whose studio practices will complement and challenge each other.

Room and Board: Living accommodations also vary according to the site. Fellows can expect to be provided with homestay, private, or shared accommodations. Meals will be provided either in a community setting or through a monthly stipend for personal shopping.

Cultural Immersion

ARTISTS ABROAD encourages our fellows to fully immerse themselves in their new environment. We provide language support and require fellows to participate. We’ve also designed weekly assignments that provide creative opportunities for participants to explore their community and grow to understand the society and culture. We believe through collaboration and conversation, the arts can facilitate profound cultural understanding.

Financial Detail

The Artist Fellowship is fully funded. ARTISTS ABROAD and its partner organizations cover the total cost of flights, housing, and food for the duration of your stay.  However, participants are required to submit a fully-refundable $1000 deposit that will be returned to them upon completion of their one year contract.

We seek to provide artists an opportunity to create work, collaborate with their host, and learn from their community free of financial stress.

Health and Safety

There is nothing more important to ARTISTS ABROAD  than the health, safety, and security of every fellow. Fellows will typically experience less-developed transportation systems, new diets, and new challenges to personal resilience. Other challenges can include different housing and sanitation norms and less health-care infrastructure than what is available in their home country. ARTISTS ABROAD requires that all fellows have personal travel insurance. We also ensure 24/7 contact with a US-based team member.  Finally, we partner with safe and reliable host artists and communities that help transition our fellows into the local culture.

FAQ

WHERE WILL I LIVE?

Artists Abroad and its partners provide participants with local housing in the form of studio apartments, shared accommodation, or home-stays. All housing has running water and electricity but are often very basic and situated within the local community. Participants will have their own private bedroom.

WHAT KINDS OF WORK/ARTIST DOES ARTISTS ABROAD SUPPORT?

We accept artists working across all mediums within the field of visual arts. We seek to place fellows with hosts with which they can effectively collaborate.

DO I NEED TO KNOW THE LOCAL LANGUAGE?

No. It is not a requirement to have prior experience in the local language. We do, however, require that all applicants have native level fluency in english and study the local language as part of pre-departure orientation and throughout their fellowship.

CAN I APPLY WITH MY PARTNER OR COLLABORATOR?

No. Because of limitations in our partner’s housing and class or studio space, we only fund individual applicants.

ARE SHORTER PLACEMENTS AVAILABLE?

No. The fellow will be working closely with the community and with their host artist. They will also be expected to create a body of work which will take a large investment of time. To gain and contribute the most in this experience, we only place fellows for a full year.
